WELCOME TO THE ECONOMIST'S VERY OWN PATTERN LIBRARY! We should avoid using any elements that are non-standard, non-valid, obsolete, or deprecated. In the responsive website, we'll use only standard HTML5 elements as described in the Mozilla Development Network. It’s here where we start to see the DESIGN coming together and start seeing things like layout in action. Templates consist of components or of groups of components stitched together to form pages. Sketch and prototype with pencil & paper.Research (markets, competition, patterns, analytics). To add a new component to the library, the following are the steps: The pattern library and its Styleguide do not replace the usual user experience process. Using the pattern library and semantic markup requires that every component have a purpose or context within the page. The layout of components may be different across screen sizes and devices, but the style of those same blocks should be consistent. In other words, the style of individual blocks and their layout (arrangement horizontally and vertically on a grid) are now separated. For example, while waiting for the wireframes, the visual designer can work on the design of a component without setting expectations for where that component will ultimately be positioned across various screen sizes or devices. The separation of style from layout is important because it helps everyone to focus on their roles - the designer, the developer, the product owner, and the stakeholders. Texture: decorative aspects, including borders, shading and shapes.Color: evoking mood and highlighting actions.Typography: typefaces, type treatments and white space. The Styleguide of the website consists of design elements: Typography, Color, Texture, and others that evoke feelings, emotions, mood, or what we call visual identity. Style should be independent of layout or functionality. Type (breadcrumbs, blockquotes, separators).Interface elements (carousels or scrollers, and so on).Images (content, iconography, visualization, sprites). The pattern library gives developers better HTML/CSS structure and direction to build the common blocks of semantic markup. The Pattern library is a collection of elements, where some elements describe the site structure and layout and others describe its style. ElementsĪny page can be broken down into a variety of elements. Collectively, patterns build a lexicon that encourages common vocabulary and clear communication between all: developers, designers, and stakeholders. The pattern library allows you to simultaneously see components abstractly and in context. ![]() The pattern library serves as a blueprint for creating components that solve repeating usability and design problems.
